San Francisco Postcard Club
June 24, 2017, I was invited to give a talk about my newest book, Dearest Minnie. I used my computer and their large screen to show slides of the postcards when the fleet visited California, specifically San Francisco Bay Area. My brother and sister-in-law graciously drove me to the event as I didn’t have a clue how to find my way in San Francisco.
What a fun and attentive group of people. Their meetings are held at Fort Mason in San Francisco on the fourth Saturday of each month. For more details visit their web site.
I was surprised to see my son and his girl friend walk into the meeting room to hear my talk along with her parents and her visiting grandparents whom I had never met; a real thrill for me. My son made reservations at a restaurant at Fisherman’s Wharf for all of us. What a delightful afternoon meeting new people, signing and selling books and being with my family. Thank you all!

Dearest Minnie resurrects an overlooked period in US history when our isolated country asserted itself as an emerging global power. The postcards celebrating the voyage, Ms. Compton’s meticulous research and her focus on the seaman’s role in this adventure create a tale worth reading even more than once.
